The Master of Education in Administration and Supervision Program at National Louis University is designed for certified and experienced educators who want to take on leadership roles—including principal positions—in K-12 educational settings.
Consider getting your Master of Education at National Louis University (NLU) if you want to earn your:
- Type 75 administrative certificate in Illinois
- Type 51 license and Type 10 endorsement in Wisconsin
- State of Florida transcript endorsement for Educational Leadership
Why NLU for Graduate Education
NLU has a long-standing reputation for its education and administrator training programs, and is accredited by the National Council for Accreditation of Teacher Education (NCATE). Since 1886, we've trained thousands of Chicago-area teachers, and continue to graduate the majority of Illinois' Golden Apple Award winners—one of the most prestigious teacher honors in the state. Our instructors bring both academic skills and their extensive leadership experience to the classroom, which brings unique depth to NLU’s Master of Education programs.
What You Will Learn
- How to design and analyze system priorities and improvement plans
- How to effectively lead and manage, while building collaboration in a school environment to ensure both student and faculty success
- How to work more effectively with a team to identify, clarify and solve organizational challenges
- How to evaluate financial and budgetary appropriations
Career Outlook
Employment for school administrators is projected to grow about 8 percent between 2008 and 2018. Job opportunities should be excellent due to a large number of expected retirements and fewer applicants.[1]
NLU has excellent placement rates for our graduate education students, helping them find opportunities through the university's Career Development Center.
State Certification Requirements
Illinois
The General Administrative Certification is required for the position of assistant principal or principal and related or similar positions. Individuals seeking General Administrative Certification in Illinois must have two years teaching or school personnel experience.
Wisconsin
The sequence of courses qualifies the student for the endorsement of the Type 51 license (K-12 principalship) and the endorsement of the Type 10 license (Director of Instruction). By taking one additional course (SPE561 Supervision of Programs for Exceptional Children and Adolescents) the student also qualifies for the endorsement of the Type 80 license (Director of Pupil Services/Special Education). The State of Wisconsin requires three years school personnel or teaching experience to gain the Type 51, Type 10 or Type 80 licensure.
Florida
Graduates of the Master of Education and Educational Specialist in Administration and Supervision program may receive a transcript endorsement indicating the completion of a state approved program in Educational Leadership.
While the Educational Leadership programs are the same in all locations, certification processes, criteria, and license titles vary by state. NLU’s Educational Leadership Department Chair and campus Program Coordinators advise students about specific certification requirements and processes.
Admission Requirements
All applicants must meet NLU's general admission requirements. Refer to the appropriate application checklist available online at www.nl.edu/applyonline.
In addition to NLU's general admission requirements, applicants to the Administration and Supervision program must also satisfy the following:
- Basic skills test as required by the state in which the applicant is seeking certification
- Grade point average of 3.0 or higher for the most recent 60 credit hours. GPAs lower than 3.0 will be considered for admission on an individual basis
- Two years of teaching experience accrued while holding a valid teaching certificate or four years experience working in schools while holding a valid school service personnel certificate. Any exceptions to this policy must be approved by the department chair
- One letter of recommendation from an educational leader who can testify on behalf of the applicant's commitment to and aspiration to serve as a school leader
- Faculty review
Additional Program Requirements
A state required internship component is part of the NLU program. Students will complete approximately 16 hours of an internship each month and will have an internship advisor from NLU to support them throughout their program. The internship is modeled after the Chicago Public Schools Principal Preparation program. This includes video evaluation of teacher performance, mock interviews, resume building, etc. Graduating students will be eligible for the CPS principal test. 95 percent of NLU students pass the Type 75 exam.
