Continuing the Legacy of the National College of Education

Since its founding by Elizabeth Harrison in 1886, the institution now known as National Louis University has experienced several changes to its name and home campus. While the institution went through a difficult period of problematic leadership and fiscal issues many years ago, what was known for decades as the National College of Education has returned to its roots, both physically and metaphorically, and emerged even stronger than before. Miss Harrison’s very first class for immigrant mothers was held directly across the street from where the University is now headquartered in downtown Chicago. This present institution’s commitment to providing teaching and learning opportunities – to students from all backgrounds – remains steadfast, as summarized in its 2030 Strategic Plan. In bringing back the tradition of milestone class reunions after a long-dormant period, National Louis University is proudly reconnecting with its alumni and sharing the institution’s continued growth and upward trajectory. Importantly, we remain grateful to all of our graduates through the years for helping us make Miss Harrison’s bold vision a reality, and for transforming the communities in which they live and work.

National Louis University Today

Mission Statement: National Louis University is an inclusive, innovative community providing educational opportunities that inspire and empower all learners as they prepare for and advance in meaningful lives and productive careers.

Today, NLU is a private, not-for-profit university with its main campus in Chicago, additional locations in suburban Wheeling and Lisle, and Tampa, Florida, and a significant online presence. NLU offers more than 70 undergraduate, graduate and doctoral degree programs, as well as credentials and endorsements oriented toward career and professional development, across seven colleges. Students attend NLU in pursuit of careers that include computer science and social work, teaching and education administration, psychology and counseling, business and leadership, culinary arts and hospitality management, and nursing and other health professions.

Every year, NLU serves 11,000 students, about half undergraduate and half graduate. The average age of undergraduate students is 28, and 38 for graduate students; 77% of all students identify as female. Among first-time, full-time undergraduate students, the average age is 19, 88% are students of color, 86% are first-generation college goers, and 70% come from low-income households. The average NLU undergraduate tuition is $11,000 annually, meaning that students who qualify for the maximum state and federal aid can attend NLU for zero dollars out of pocket – removing a significant barrier for many. NLU has been designated a Hispanic-Serving Institution (HSI) and Minority-Serving Institution (MSI) by the U.S. Department of Education.

NLU’s important work has been recognized widely, most recently by Washington Monthly which ranked NLU as #30 nationally for contributing to the public good, #14 for advancing our students’ social mobility, and #1 “Best Bang for the Buck” in the Midwest for our affordability.
