NLU Seeks to Build the Talent Pool of Latinx Faculty with the CLAVE Postdoctoral Fellowship Program

The Centro de Excelencia at National Louis University serves as the hub for programs and initiatives that advance our work as a community and career-focused Hispanic-Serving Institution (HSI). The CLAVE Postdoctoral Fellowship program is a key component of the grant.

CLAVE is an acronym for “Comunidades Latinas Académicas con Visión de Éxito,” [Latino Academic Communities with Vision of Success]. Through its Graduate Student Institute, the Center seeks to increase enrollment of Latinx students in Masters and Doctoral programs, develop and support a network of promising doctoral scholars, and increase their professional networks, writing capacity, and financial and professional knowledge. This work is supported by the Promoting Post-baccalaureate Opportunities for Hispanic Americans (PPOHA) program, a grant from the Hispanic-Serving Institutions Division of the Department of Education

The goal of the CLAVE Postdoctoral Fellowship  Program, within the CLAVE Graduate Student Institute at National Louis University, is to build the talent pool of Latinx faculty at colleges and universities at both the national and local levels, particularly in the metropolitan Chicago area. Successful candidates for the program are selected on the basis of scholarly promise and potential for research and/or community engagement pertaining to Latinx or other BIPOC groups in doctoral education.

The CLAVE Graduate Student Institute is extremely pleased to introduce the 2020-2021 CLAVE Postdoctoral Fellow: Dr. Mónica Haydeé Ramos.

Dr. Mónica Haydeé Ramos was awarded the inaugural CLAVE Postdoctoral Fellowship from Centro de Excelencia at National Louis University for her research potential and work with under-resourced communities. During her appointment, she will build upon her teaching skills to pursue a tenure-track faculty position and produce scholarship relevant to the interests and needs of historically marginalized groups in higher education. Her research intends to identify key strategies for institutional connections between first-generation college families, community organizations, and higher education. Dr. Ramos aims to offer a compelling link between families of color, community, and Hispanic-Serving Institutions (HSIs) by examining NLU’s initial and ongoing institutional efforts to support and uplift BIPOC students (Black, Indigenous, People of Color).

Currently, she serves as the Assistant Director of the Egan Office for Urban Education and Community Partnerships at the Irwin W. Steans Center at DePaul University. In collaboration with the Director, she guides the Egan Office’s work in supporting community-driven efforts to achieve equity and justice. Dr. Ramos oversees the school-based partnerships and family engagement initiatives. She nurtures sustainable and successful partnerships within diverse communities in the city and the university. She served as the inaugural Latinx Cultural Center Coordinator in the Office of Multicultural Student Success (OMSS) at DePaul University. She has held positions at National Louis University, Harry S. Truman College, and Connections for Abused Women and their Children (CAWC) in the Greenhouse Shelter.

Dr. Ramos’ areas of expertise are family and community engagement, curriculum development, Latinx identities, and culturally responsive teaching and learning approaches. She has participated as an international scholar presenting her work in conferences and seminars. As a result of her work with first-generation students and immigrant families, she received a Fulbright International Education Administrators (IEA) award and a UNESCO CONFINTEA fellowship. At UNESCO, Dr. Ramos researched intergenerational learning in immigrant and refugee communities. She collaborated with a group of international educators  in the publication, UNESCO Institute of Lifelong Learning , “Learning Together Across Generations: Guidelines for Family Literacy and Learning Programs.” (Hanemann, U., McCaffery, J., Newell-Jones, K & Scarpino, C. 2017).

Originally from Mexico, she migrated to the United States in 2005. She has received accolades from local organizations. Negocios Now recognized her as one of the 40 under 40 most influential Latinos in Chicago, and Verizon named her the New Latina Star. In 2020, she received an Ed.D. in Teaching and Learning with a concentration in Curriculum, Advocacy, and Policy from National Louis University. She also holds an M.Ed. in Adult Education from National Louis University and has a BA in Education and Human Development from the Universidad del Valle de Atemajac (UNIVA).
