NLU Florida Vaxes Up!

The winners of the #NLUVaxUp campaign have been selected for the Fall Term! Our first two winners come from NLU’s Florida campus located in Tampa, FL. Read on to find out why they got vaccinated, and why they think it’s important for everyone to pitch in and do their part to keep the larger community safe. And most importantly, if you haven’t already, please #VaxUp to make sure the academic year gets off to a productive and healthy start.

Jomane Thompson (2022), M.Ed. in Educational Leadership

What motivated you to get vaccinated?

I just think it is the right thing to do for the common good. As a Civics teacher and frontline worker, I knew I was at a higher risk of contracting the virus. I wanted to protect myself, my students, my staff members, and my family.

Why do you think it’s important to get as many individuals in our communities vaccinated as possible?

Definitely! To slow the spread and reduce the chances of the virus mutating. I think everyone wants to go back to a world of pre-Covid and the vaccine brings us closer to that reality.

How will this scholarship help you?

It will help financially to buy text books and resources needed to successfully complete my graduate program.

I just wanted to let you know that I’m happy to be a student at NLU. My experience thus far has exceeded all expectations and I’m excited to continue my academic journey at this institution.

Evin Janik (2026), Psy.D. in Clinical Psychology

Thank you for reaching out to me to let me know about the scholarship. I am very grateful for this opportunity.

What motivated you to get vaccinated?

I got vaccinated because I did not want to put my loved ones in danger. I live in a large elderly community, and I am a server. I did not want to be a carrier and be the reason someone ended up in the hospital.

Why do you think it’s essential to get as many individuals in our communities vaccinated as possible?

I believe that we agree to a social contract by living in this country. We agree to give up some rights to protect the greater good. In getting the vaccine, I am showing my neighbors that I am willing to defend them. The more individuals that are vaccinated, the fewer people catch and die of covid. It is our duty to treat others the way we want to be treated, which is safe and healthy.

How will this scholarship help you?

This scholarship gives me the opportunity to focus on my education instead of worrying about how I am going to afford school.

Sincerely,

Evin Janik
