Meet Sevtap Guldur, a distinguished alumna of the Master of Public Administration program at National Louis University (NLU). Hailing from the vibrant Lincoln Square neighborhood of Chicago, Sevtap’s journey is one that intertwines a commitment to education, community, and the pursuit of personal passions.
Sevtap’s academic odyssey commenced with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Political Science with a concentration on Social Justice from Northeastern Illinois University. However, her story is not just about degrees, but about breaking barriers. As a first-generation college graduate, Sevtap has always been a staunch advocate for those embarking on a similar path.
So, why NLU? For Sevtap, it was the genuine care exhibited by the faculty and staff for their students’ success. The holistic support system at NLU guided her toward a fulfilling career trajectory, setting the stage for her impactful contributions.
Currently donning the hat of a Career Advisor/Employer Relations Manager at NLU’s Career Bridge since November 2021, Sevtap plays a pivotal role in supporting undergraduate students at the Wheeling campus. Her passion lies in forging partnerships with employers, paving the way for students to secure internships and post-graduate employment opportunities. It’s a role she relishes, contributing to the growth and success of the next generation.
When asked about her favorite class, Sevtap highlights PPA 503 – Leadership of Public/Non-Profit Organization. This course provided insights into diverse leadership styles, a knowledge she seamlessly applied in her workplace. Observing her department lead’s transformational leadership style inspired her, emphasizing the importance of trust-building and fostering a common vision.
Beyond the academic realm, Sevtap’s interests are as diverse as her professional pursuits. A maestro with the 81-stringed instrument known as the kanun, a Turkish lap harp, she finds solace and energy in its harmonies. She is also an active member of the 50-piece music ensemble at the University of Chicago’s Middle East Music Ensemble, showcasing her dedication to both cultural preservation and artistic expression.
Reflecting on her educational journey, Sevtap shares, “What I am most proud of is believing in myself and knowing anything is possible, as long as you put your best foot forward.” Balancing a full-time job, graduate school, and family responsibilities might be challenging, but Sevtap emphasizes that it is undeniably achievable with consistent time management.
Sevtap Guldur’s story embodies resilience, passion, and a commitment to making a difference. As an alumna who continues to contribute meaningfully to her community and profession, her journey serves as an inspiration for current and future NLU students, reinforcing the belief that with determination, anything is possible.
