At 35 years old, Bianca Zollicoffer made what she calls "the best decision I have ever made" – enrolling in National Louis University's ECE/Special Education program. As a single mother working full-time, Bianca's journey to higher education wasn't just about personal achievement; it was about filling a critical gap she witnessed in early childhood services.
Bianca's path to NLU was inspired by a profound realization about children who need support the most. "So many children ages 0-3 miss out on free services because there is a lack of knowledge surrounding early intervention," she explains. This awareness drove her to pursue a dual focus in Early Childhood Education and Special Education, positioning herself to make a meaningful impact during the most crucial developmental years.
Her career aspiration reflects this passion: opening a home childcare specifically designed for special needs children. "Having been able to work in this field and see the need and truly loving what I do has influenced me to reach for the stars!" Bianca shares.
When Bianca first inquired about NLU's program, she connected with Nathalis, whose knowledge and guidance helped her navigate the enrollment process. But it was the combination of support and practical program design that sealed the deal. "I received the ECACE scholarship! As a single mother working full time, the competency-based program was such a lifesaver!" she emphasizes.
The flexibility of NLU's approach allowed Bianca to balance her studies with her responsibilities as a working parent – a crucial factor in her educational success.
One of Bianca's most transformative experiences at NLU demonstrates the immediate relevance of her education. While taking special education courses, she noticed that some of her teachers were struggling with certain students in their classrooms. "I was able to take what I was learning, share it and apply it to everyday life," she recalls. This moment highlighted not just her growing expertise, but the practical value of her NLU education.
When asked to describe NLU in one word, Bianca chose "Admiration." Her reasoning speaks to the university's inclusive culture: "I admire every single faculty and student that attends. You never know someone's story but NLU truly believes no person left behind. They will find ways to help you succeed."

This philosophy became personally meaningful during a particularly challenging moment in her studies. Overwhelmed by weekly assignment deadlines while managing work and family responsibilities, Bianca reached out to Nathalis in tears, questioning whether she could finish the program. The response exemplified NLU's supportive approach: "Bianca, there is a whole team here at NLU for you. You let us know what kind of support you need and we got you!"
That conversation changed everything for Bianca. "Learning to be resourceful and supportive has been a great asset for me," she reflects.
Bianca's message to prospective NLU students is simple but powerful: "Do it now. Don't wait. You have such a support team at NLU!!"
Her journey proves that with the right support system and determination, educational dreams can become reality at any stage of life. Through her work in early childhood education and special education, Bianca is not just building her own future – she's creating a foundation for countless children to reach their full potential.
