Faces of NLU: Akilah Essex

Akilah's academic journey is driven by a clear vision. Pursuing a psychology degree, she is particularly interested in trauma-informed research and public policy. While her current plan is to work as a guidance counselor, she remains open to the possibilities that may unfold, acknowledging that her path might be guided by something greater than her current intentions.

"This is one of the first times in my life where I am excited to get to school," she shares, emphasizing the profound sense of belonging she has found among her peers.

One of the most meaningful spaces for Akilah is the Sankofa Lounge. She describes it as a guaranteed space of welcome, offering both rest and enlightenment. "Out of all the spaces in the world, there is one guaranteed room that I know I am welcomed in," she says, highlighting the importance of inclusive campus spaces.

Akilah sees Black History Month as a critical time of recognition and reflection. For her, it's more than just a commemorative period—it's an opportunity for broader societal acknowledgment. She hopes that through this month, everyone can gain a deeper understanding of the significance and necessity of celebrating African American history and resilience.
