When Edwin Rosendo was nearing graduation at Pritzker College Prep, his teachers recognized something special in him - a potential educator who could make a difference. Their recommendation led him to National Louis University, an institution with a strong reputation for training the next generation of teachers.
"I chose National Louis University because the programs aligned perfectly with my goal of becoming an elementary education teacher," Edwin explains. "NLU is recognized for its excellence in preparing teachers, and that reputation was confirmed by both my high school teachers and friends who were already studying here."

As a first-generation college student, Edwin's journey to higher education wasn't without challenges. He graduated high school in 2021, during the pandemic, which meant his first year at NLU was largely virtual. Despite this unusual beginning, Edwin received tremendous support from his professors and the university community. "Learning to navigate college was something new for me, especially since my first year was during the pandemic. It was all virtual, so I didn't have much in-person experience at first, but I received a lot of support from my teachers."
Edwin's passion for elementary education stems from his desire to make a positive impact on future generations. His own experience as a bilingual student shaped his educational goals. "I was born here in Chicago and learned to read and write at grade level in fifth grade. It wasn't easy, but night school was essential for developing my English skills," he shares. "Being surrounded by teachers throughout my education inspired me to become one myself."

Edwin is particularly motivated to become a bilingual teacher, noting that "every student deserves a right education" and that there's a need for more male teachers, especially bilingual ones, in schools."My goal is to help students who face similar situations to what I experienced as a child," he says.
Several factors made NLU Edwin's final choice for his education. The financial aid package, accessible location, and smaller class sizes were all significant considerations."The smaller classes at NLU compared to other schools was a major factor in my decision," Edwin notes. "Plus, if you need extra help, there's learning support available for you."
When asked to describe his career goal in one word, Edwin chose "positive" - a reflection of his optimistic approach to education and life.
His determination is perhaps best illustrated by how his personal life connects to his professional aspirations. Edwin shares that his two-year-old brother, who was born premature and is showing signs of autism, has further inspired his teaching journey. "Watching my baby brother grow and recognizing that he needs extra support has inspired me even more to become a teacher," Edwin explains. "While my goal is specifically to be a bilingual teacher, this experience has shown me how important it is to understand the diverse needs of all students."
Edwin describes NLU in one word as "excellent," highlighting how the university has helped him achieve his goals through both virtual and in-person learning experiences.
His favorite class so far has been Math Lab 105 with Mr. Gabriel and Ms. Bonita. "Even though I don't typically like math, this class was fun and engaging. We worked in small groups, and the teachers were always available to help us understand the material," he recalls fondly.
Edwin also highlights Professor Joao from his EAL-300 class as a favorite instructor who was responsive to emails and helped students understand content in ways that connected with their own language experiences.
Despite starting college during pandemic restrictions, Edwin has been actively involved in several organizations including Education Rising, where he served as co-president of the Chicago chapter and El Centro De Excelencia. "With Education Rising, I learned valuable skills that will help me in my future career, like creating lesson plans and developing after-school programs," he explains. "Being part of La Posada Navideña through El Centro has been meaningful as we celebrate this tradition at the Chicago campus. It's really important to never forget your cultural background."

Edwin's advice for new students coming to NLU is practical and encouraging: "Ask as many questions as possible and write them down. There's no wrong question to ask," he emphasizes.
He also encourages students to seek out resources, noting that "there's a lot of help provided for native and non-native English speakers. Get involved in as many programs as possible, whether they're after school, during evenings, or during lunch. There are many free resources available - just ask questions!"
Edwin's journey at National Louis University exemplifies the university's commitment to supporting students from all backgrounds as they pursue their educational and career goals. His determination to become a bilingual teacher and make a positive impact on future generations is inspiring - truly embodying what it means to be a Face of NLU.
