When Heather Gandy began looking for an MBA program, she had specific criteria in mind. She needed a university that understood Chicago, offered affordable tuition, and could help her expand the impact of her accounting and management skills in the nonprofit sector. National Louis University checked all the boxes.

"There are lots of online MBA options, but I wanted a university that was in Chicago, that could relate to my community—professors that could understand the challenges and opportunities that we experience in Chicagoland," Heather explains. "I also knew that I would need an affordable program, and NLU fit both of those aspects."

If Heather had to describe NLU in one word, she wouldn't hesitate: "Invigorating." The MBA program pushed her beyond familiar territory and reignited her professional passion. "The classes got me out of my comfort zone and allowed me to rediscover and reenergize my career and aspirations," she shares.

Like many adult learners, Heather faced the challenge of balancing a full-time job, family commitments, and coursework. Time management became her greatest obstacle, with late nights becoming a regular part of her routine. But the quality of the assignments made the sacrifice worthwhile. "It helped that the assignments were engaging and valuable, so I could see the benefits of getting them done, in spite of the typical late nights," she says.

When asked about meaningful interactions with professors, Heather found the question difficult—because there were so many to choose from. She recalls Dr. Callery's class as particularly impactful, not just for its academic rigor, but for the honest conversations about what pursuing an MBA really means.

"She was open that yes, we will miss out on some things during this course of study, we'll miss important events and family gatherings and have to prioritize things, but it would be worth it at the end," Heather remembers. "NLU professors didn't just teach the course material—they did that well—but they also provided support and skills for broader areas of life and career that were very helpful and meaningful."

Looking back on her experience, Heather sees her time at NLU as transformative. "NLU was a great experience that benefitted my career and enhanced my perspectives on our community and enriched my life overall."

Today, Heather continues to pursue her goal of using her enhanced skills to make a broader impact in the nonprofit arena, equipped with not just an MBA, but with renewed energy and a deeper connection to the Chicagoland community she serves.
