Faces of NLU: Karen Morales

When Karen Morales began her M.S. in Business Data Analytics at National Louis University, she was looking for a program that aligned with her career goals while offering the flexibility she needed. What she found was something far more profound—a transformative experience that would reshape how she views education, student support, and her own potential.

For Karen, choosing NLU was about more than just academics. The program's unique combination of in-person and online classes offered the flexibility she needed to balance her education with a full-time career supporting students at the university. The affordability and career alignment sealed the deal, making NLU the clear choice for her graduate studies.

Karen's career aspiration is to become a leader in data-driven student success and enrollment strategy within higher education, ultimately serving as an Assistant Director or Director who uses analytics, technology, and compassionate student support to improve educational access. But it was a specific moment during her program that crystallized this vision.

"Seeing the data come alive and realizing it directly reflected the students I supported every day, completely shifted my perspective," Karen shares. "It showed me that behind every spreadsheet was a real person whose success could be influenced by something as simple as when an email was sent or whether a reminder was triggered."

This revelation transformed how Karen approaches her work, bridging the gap between numbers and the human stories they represent.

Karen's educational journey has been marked by extraordinary resilience. While completing her master's degree, she faced a serious health challenge while working full-time and supporting hundreds of students at NLU. The convergence of medical appointments, treatment, recovery, academic deadlines, and professional responsibilities tested her in ways she never anticipated.

"There were moments when I felt overwhelmed—when medical appointments collided with assignments, when fatigue made it difficult to focus, and when I worried that I wouldn't be able to finish the program I had worked so hard for," Karen reflects. "But my determination came from knowing why I started: to advance in my career, to make a bigger impact in student success, and to be a role model for learners who face their own barriers."

Through it all, Karen learned a powerful lesson: "Progress, even slow progress, was still progress." She communicated with her professors, leaned on her support system, and used every spare moment wisely. Her challenges became part of her purpose, especially in a field where empathy and resilience matter deeply.

When asked to describe National Louis University in one word, Karen chose "transformative" without hesitation. The university didn't just provide her with an education—it transformed her perspective on education, student support, and her career path.

The compassion she experienced from her professors when she shared her health struggles exemplified NLU's student-centered approach. Their understanding and support helped her navigate one of the most challenging periods of her life while continuing to pursue her goals.

Karen's advice to students considering NLU is simple but powerful: "You are more capable than you think, and NLU is a place where you can truly transform your future—academically, professionally, and personally. Just start. The rest will fall into place with commitment and support."

Her journey is a testament to the power of determination and the impact of an educational community that truly cares. Karen proved that determination isn't about never struggling—it's about choosing to keep moving forward, even when the path is difficult.

As she prepares to take the next steps in her career, Karen carries with her not just a master's degree, but a strengthened sense of purpose and the knowledge that behind every data point is a student whose life can be changed for the better.
