When Dr. Ruth Davis first encountered a brochure about Elizabeth Harrison, NLU's founder, in 1996, she made a decision that would shape the next 30 years of her career. Despite having a full assistantship awaiting her at UIC for a master's and doctoral program, Davis was captivated by Harrison's vision of education as a transformational rather than transactional experience.

"I read how she founded a university that infused every area of its institution with a commitment towards embracing human potential for the betterment of society," Davis recalls. "I knew I wanted to be a part of such a dynamic institution." That initial connection to NLU's mission has sustained Davis through a remarkable career spanning nearly three decades.

Davis offers powerful advice for young women beginning careers in higher education administration: "Own your voice and who you have been uniquely made to be. When you have something to say, speak up in rooms where decisions are being made."

She emphasizes the importance of mentorship and continuous learning: "Seek out mentorship and see every encounter as an opportunity to learn and expand your thinking."

At the heart of her philosophy is the belief that "our purpose is discovered in the subtle, everyday choices that define our character," which is why she encourages others to "lead with authenticity and intentionality. By doing so, I believe, we open doors for others who will walk this path after us."

Davis expresses optimism about the future of women in higher education. "More women are stepping into presidencies, provost roles, and executive leadership positions, which ultimately encourages other women to see themselves in those roles.”

As our conversation concludes, Davis shares a message for the entire NLU community: "I want every person reading this to know that your voice, your contributions, and your leadership matter. Whether you are just starting your journey or have years of experience, your presence is making a difference."

She reminds us of the profound ripple effect we can have on others: "Each of our lives intersects with the lives of others and though we might not always see the impact we make, our action (be it a word or something we do) might just change the trajectory of someone's life. With this view, I believe we have a responsibility to take seriously the role and impact we have on ourselves, others and the world around us."
