When Sean McGill completed his Masters in Teaching at National Louis University in 2010, he didn't realize he'd be back more than a decade later. But that's exactly where his educational journey has led him—back to the institution he describes in one word as "progressive."
Now pursuing his Ed.S. in Teaching and Learning, Sean represents the kind of dedicated educator that embodies NLU's values. His return to campus wasn't a difficult decision. "NLU was really the only choice I considered for my doctoral program," he explains, highlighting the lasting impression the university made during his master's studies.

Sean's initial NLU experience in the MAT program prepared him for classroom success, but he's now setting his sights on something bigger. "I'm looking forward to the Ed.D. program preparing me to make a difference on an even larger scale," he shares. This ambition is perfectly captured in his one-word career goal: "Changemaker."
His decision to pursue an advanced degree stems from a desire to elevate his existing work. "I wanted to take my experience in education and advocacy to the next level," Sean explains. While he describes his current academic goals as "general," he's trusting the program's process to help him narrow his focus as he progresses.
Support has been crucial to Sean's educational path. "My husband was the biggest supporter of my decision, as well as my mother," he notes. "Friends and colleagues have also been very supportive." The university itself provided assistance through an alumni scholarship, offering a 15% reduction in tuition that Sean describes as "unexpected financial relief."
The CAP (Curriculum, Advocacy, and Policy) program ultimately sealed the deal for Sean. "It seemed like the perfect fit for my experience and interests," he reflects. Just one term into his program, he's already finding value in his coursework, having completed classes in research theory and research design that "complemented each other well."

Despite being early in his program, Sean already has wisdom to share with incoming NLU students: "Don't be afraid to reach out to instructors and fellow students when things get stressful. We're all here to help each other succeed."
His perspective highlights the collaborative community that NLU fosters—a place where returning alumni like Sean can continue their professional evolution while finding new ways to impact education on a broader scale. As Sean continues his journey from classroom teacher to potential policy advocate, the NLU community will be watching this changemaker's progress with interest and support.
