Letter From Salma Hernandez, Class of 2027
My name is Salma Hernandez, and I am an undergraduate student at National Louis University, majoring in Education with a concentration in English. My goal is to become a special education teacher. I am writing today to share my story and to ask you to consider making a year-end gift to NLU. Your generosity helps students like me gain the education and experience we need to pursue meaningful careers and build bright futures.
My journey toward teaching began in 2019 when I worked as an after-school instructor with fifth through eighth graders. That experience changed my life. I discovered how much I loved helping students learn, express their ideas and grow into themselves. I want to create classrooms where students feel valued and supported, especially diverse learners who, too often, face unnecessary barriers. One day, I hope to design programs that celebrate their potential and open pathways for their success beyond high school.
My grandfather, a teacher and soccer coach who immigrated from Mexico in the 1980s, inspired me to follow this path. Before he passed away, he reminded me that education is the key to opportunity and told me to stay in school and follow my dreams. I carry his words with me every day; earning my degree is not just my goal – it is a promise to him.
Scholarships have made it possible for me to keep that promise. Without them, I would not be able to devote myself so fully to my studies or prepare for the career I envision. That is why your support matters so deeply. When you give to NLU, you invest in students who are determined to make a difference in their communities and in the lives of others.
