NLU Accelerate U’s RBT Program is Growing—and Changing Lives

Since launching in November 2022, Accelerate U’s Registered Behavior Technician (RBT) pathway has been transforming career pathways for aspiring behavioral health professionals. RBTs work with young people under the age of 15 who are on the autism spectrum, helping them build essential behavior skills through structured interventions. Fast forward to November 2024, and the program just welcomed its largest cohort yet—18 new RBT candidates eager to make a difference.

What makes this program unique? It’s AU’s first “earn and learn” model, allowing students to get certified while working part-time with employer partner LEARN Behavioral/Total Spectrum. As they progress, they gain hands-on experience, gradually increasing their work hours and skills.

AU and LEARN have also turned an empty classroom at National Louis University (NLU) into something remarkable—a fully functioning behavioral health clinic. Open every weekday, the clinic serves families eligible for Medicaid, providing critical services while giving RBT trainees a space to hone their skills. Thanks to growing demand, AU recently expanded into a second classroom, reinforcing its commitment to accessible healthcare and career training.

Jada’s Story: From Passion to Profession

For Jada, a self-proclaimed “boy mom” to an energetic toddler, the RBT program was a game-changer. With a background working with Pre-K to 8th graders at Chicago Public Schools and coaching cheer, she was looking for her next step—one that fit her schedule and future goals.

“It was the very best program for me,” Jada shared during a mock interview session. “It fits my schedule perfectly, and I know there will be a job waiting at the end.”

Now, as part of the AU Spring 2024 cohort, she’s thriving. Working with young clients at the Total Spectrum clinic, she lights up talking about their art projects and bubble play. And when she needed emergency support before her job started, AU was there, thanks to grant funding.

“I fell in love with NLU,” she said. “They want you to do well.”

With stories like Jada’s, it’s clear—AU’s RBT program isn’t just growing. It’s changing lives.
