NLU Alumna’s $60,000 Gift Supports Future School Leaders Through New EAGLES Program

National Louis University is proud to recognize alumna Denise A. Bunning, CAS ’97, and the Sunshine Charitable Foundation for a generous $60,000 gift that will support the National College of Education’s new principal induction program, EAGLES (Engaging Administrators in Growth, Leadership, and Educational Success).

The gift, made in honor of Bunning’s 60th birthday, reflects her lifelong commitment to education, leadership development and creating opportunities that strengthen schools and communities.

An educator, advocate and philanthropist, Bunning has dedicated her career to improving the lives of children and families. She is the co-founder and president of MOCHA (Mothers of Children Having Allergies) and serves in leadership roles with several nonprofit and healthcare organizations. Her work has helped advance awareness, research and support for individuals and families navigating food allergies and related health conditions.

Bunning’s connection to National Louis University extends well beyond her academic achievements. She earned a Certificate of Advanced Study (CAS) in School Administration from NLU in 1997, complementing degrees from Boston College and Northern Illinois University. Today, she remains actively engaged with the university as a charter member of Dean Carolyn Theard-Griggs’ NCE Brain Trust Advisory Council and serves as Co-Chair of the NCE Endowed Deanship Campaign, helping advance the college’s mission and long-term impact.

The donation will help launch and sustain the EAGLES program, an innovative leadership initiative designed to support new school administrators as they navigate the challenges of educational leadership. Through mentoring, professional learning and practical leadership development, the program aims to equip principals with the skills, confidence and support needed to succeed in today’s schools.

“Denise’s generosity is a powerful investment in the future of educational leadership,” said Theard-Griggs. “This gift will help us prepare and support principals who will positively influence students, educators and school communities for years to come.”

For Bunning, the gift represents an opportunity to invest in future generations of educational leaders and strengthen the pathways that help schools thrive.

“Education has always been close to my heart, and I’m grateful for the role NLU played in my professional journey,” said Bunning. “Supporting the EAGLES program is an opportunity to invest in educational leaders who will make a meaningful difference in their schools and communities.”

Bunning’s contribution reflects National Louis University’s mission of empowering educators and leaders to make a lasting difference. Through the support of dedicated alumni and community partners, NLU continues to expand opportunities that strengthen education and transform lives.
