Courageous Conversations Series

This Fall's Connections theme is Dare to be Courageous. With that theme guiding our work this year, we are launching a series of conversations that will help us connect on a deeper level and better understand the challenges we face within our programs, colleges, and institution.

The Courageous Conversations series of professional development will focus on building community among faculty and staff and offer a safe place to surface concerns around Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, and Belonging. These conversations can also serve as a model for faculty and staff to use with their students and colleagues to build community (see the Teaching Excellence Framework for context).

This page will be used for faculty and staff to gather around ideas discussed in those sessions and to plan a path forward. The Padlet to the right is a place to pose questions or weigh-in on upcoming Courageous Conversations. Below you will see action steps identified during these sessions. You'll also find a sign-up to present at a Faculty Forum to share your expertise in helping us implement the action steps identified here.

Debriefing Tia Brown-McNair's Visit

Hosted by Gloria McDaniel-Hall

Please join us Downtown Chicago (4012)

Tia Brown-McNair, author of “From Equity Talk to Equity Walk,” will be visiting NLU on Thursday, February 9th. In addition to a keynote address, Dr. McNair will be meeting with the DEI Council, Senate leadership, Staff Council, and administration. We know these will be enriching conversations that will spark a passionate response.

This Courageous Conversation will be a forum to channel that passion into next steps. Please join us to debrief Dr. McNair's visit and plan our path forward.

Disaggregating Data to Build a Culture of Equity-mindedness

When: Friday (12/9) Noon - 1:00 PM

Facilitated by Donald D. Gilliam and Gloria McDaniel-Hall

To build a culture of Equity-mindedness Tia Brown-McNair, in her book From Equity Talk to Equity Walk, says, "it involves interpreting equity gaps as a signal that practices are not working as intended and asking equity-minded questions about how and why current practices are failing to serve students who are experiencing inequities.” To better understand how we can identify practices and policies that are leading equity gaps, we need to know which students are experiencing gaps; then, we need to acknowledge that our practices are contributing to those gaps.

All of this starts with viewing data that presents the whole story. Disaggregating the data by gender, race, and age helps us see a broader picture of how we are serving students. Faculty and staff will come together to explore opportunities to disaggregate data in our practice.

Defining Key DEIB Terms - Friday (11/11) Noon - 1:00 PM

Hosted by: Donald D. Gilliam and Gloria McDaniel-Hall

It is important for us to come together as a community to define DEIB terms that we will be using this year and beyond. This is an important step in building a culture of equity-mindedness and dismantling inequitable policies and practices. Staff and faculty are encouraged to attend.

Building and Sustaining an Inclusive Community. Friday (10/14), Noon - 1:00PM

Hosted by: Donald D. Gilliam and Gloria McDaniel-Hall

During this conversation, we hope to do some visioning by identifying systems of support that create, promote, and sustain a welcoming and inclusive community. We'll talk about which of these systems are already in place and which need to be developed and implemented.

CRP Data Presentation - What's Our Path Forward? Friday (9/30) Noon - 1:00 PM

In the Spring 2022 Term, Donald D.
