Research Month 2022 - Upcoming Events
This year, NLU is holding Research Month from April 29th –June 2nd. The events bring you external and internal experts on research approaches and resources and showcase what NLU faculty, staff and students are doing in research and practice. Join us!
- Friday, April 29th 1:15 – 3:45 Second Annual NLU Virtual Research Seminar with external speakers on current research topics and thought. This year’s topic: Public Scholarship: Conceptions and Actions
- Thursday, May 12th NLU Annual Doctoral Symposium
- Week of May 16 – 20th Student Research Week (Will include an undergraduate research panel, a Masters student research event, and workshops on using NLU’s research repository)
- Week of May 23 – 27th Library Research week (a bevy of workshops with topics including Zotero; Primary Resources/Archives; and the wide variety of NLU databases.
- Friday, June 3rd 1:30 – 4:00 Third Annual NLU Research and Practice Symposium, in Chicago and Online

Keynote Session - Public Scholarship: Conceptions and Actions
Keynote Presenter: Dr. Kevin Welner, University of Colorado Boulder & Dr. Bradley Olson, National Louis University
Dr. Kevin Welner, Professor University of Colorado Boulder, School of Education, and Director of the National Education Policy Center, and Dr. Bradley Olson, NLU Associate Professor in Community Psychology, will have a keynote conversation with NLU faculty on their conception and experiences with public scholarship.

Session Presenter: Dr. Jessica Rodrigues, University of Missouri
Session Moderator: Sara Rizzo, Assistant Professor, Systems & Data Services Librarian
Dr. Jessica Rodrigues, University of Missouri, will speak on her recent Educational Researcher article, Get More Eyes on your Work: Visual Approaches for Dissemination and Translation of Education Research. During the session, she will discuss the use of Twitter for building an academic online presence, describe how you can use visual abstracts for communicating research on Twitter, and offer comments and suggestions on draft visual abstracts designed by 1-2 NLU faculty and/or doctoral students.
Session Presenter: Dr. Christopher Rector, Director of Practicum Training for the Illinois School of Professional Psychology at National Louis University
Session Moderator: Chef Heidi Hedeker, Associate Professor Kendall College at NLU
Dr. Christopher Rector, Director of Practicum Training for the Illinois School of Professional Psychology at National Louis University, will speak to the reciprocal and interdisciplinary research that developed during the pandemic when clinical practice-led research at a time of great unknowns. Examples of how that new knowledge can be carried forward to learning and practices for multiple public audiences will be discussed.

NLU Doctoral Candidate Jeri Bingham will talk about her podcast, website, articles, panel discussions, and speaking engagements based on her research on introversion.
Session Presenter: Dr. Bethy Leonardi, University of Colorado Boulder
Session Moderator: Dr. Xiaoning Chen, NLU Assistant Professor ESL/Bilingual Education National College of Education
Dr. Bethy Leonardi of University of Colorado Boulder will speak to an NLU research/practice group on how they can partner to expand the advocacy and scholarship of their work. Listen to their conversation, get ideas and ask questions of your own.
Session Presenter: Deena Chalabi, The Op-Ed Project
Session Moderator: Dr. Tiffeny Jimenez, NLU Assistant Professor and Co-Director of the Ph.D. program in Community Psychology
Deena Chalabi of the Op-Ed project will give an introduction to the project’s mission of changing who writes history through the approach of elevating the ideas and knowledge of underrepresented expert voices. The NLU moderator, Dr. Tiffeny Jimenez will then host a mini-focus group to hear about your thoughts on public scholarship.
