Steps You'll Take to Customize Your Syllabus
Your syllabus template will have space for you to add your personal information and set expectations for your class.
A. Fill in the top matter with the dates that match the searchable schedule (https://www.nl.edu/course_schedule/).
B. Provide your name and contact information. We ask that you only use your NLU email that is provided to you for all student communications, and that you also provide a phone number. It may be helpful to indicate the times of day they can reach you by phone.
C. For office hours, please list at least one hour per week (in Central Time) that you have reserved specifically for this course and notate “and by appointment” to be sure students know they can reach you at other times as well. Indicate the preferred method for holding your office hours in a virtual learning environment such as Skype, Zoom or via phone. List the information, including links, so it is easy for students to access.
D. Check your textbook citation against the NLU bookstore to ensure accuracy (http://nl.edu/bookstore) – alert your key academic leader urgently if they do not match.
E. Fill in your Grading Policies, be sure to be clear on what you will accept late, within what timeframe, and what the specific penalties would be. As an institution that supports the students on their journey into growth mindset, we do ask that you accept at least late papers and quizzes (or other such summative assessments in the course). Because Discussion Questions are meant to be an active, formative assessment, we do support not allowing for late postings.
F. Fill in all the due dates for each graded item.
G. Once you are satisfied with your syllabus, please convert it to a PDF and re-upload back into your course (refer to the Faculty Resources page for instructions should you need them).
Late Policy
Please post an accountable and fair late policy in your syllabus. Our model late sample for online courses is below. We expect students to meet all deadlines as they are posted in this syllabus and in D2L. We also understand that sometimes extenuating circumstances prevent students from meeting an occasional deadline. In this course, late work will be accepted according to the following guidelines:
A. Late discussion board posts will not be accepted.
B. All Discussion Topics must be completed during the week they are due. Discussion Topic submissions will not be accepted for credit after 11:59 PM CST Sunday.
C. Late assignments and tests are accepted up to three days late with a penalty of 10% off per day. Submissions after three days will receive a grade of zero for the assignment.
D. If extenuating circumstances arise, please contact your instructor in advance of the deadline to arrange an extension. Documentation will be required for consideration of extension.
