High Impact Teaching Strategies (HITS)

High Impact Teaching Strategies, when applied correctly, reliably increase student learning.

There are hundreds of teaching strategies that faculty can utilize to facilitate their courses. Choosing which strategy should be used in a particular situation can sometimes feel like a daunting task. John Hattie (2009, 2012) and Robert Marzano (2007) have coalesced teaching techniques across hundreds of meta-analyses - representing thousands of studies - into 10 High Impact Teaching Strategies.

This CTLE digital resource takes their work a step further. The HITS are bucketed into the three categories below, which align with NLU's Teaching Excellence Framework. For each strategy, you will find an explanation, some theoretical background, and examples of what it might look like to apply that strategy in a course. This digital resource is accompanied by interactive modules in D2L. You can use the "Discover" tool in D2L to enroll in that course so that you may engage with the modules and your peers.
