NLU has already received four significant grants in the 2021-22 academic year.   All grants enact our mission of access, innovation and excellence, and reflect our deep commitment to community. 

Two awards are from highly competitive National Science Foundation (NSF) competitions: 

• NSF Build and Broaden program:  $300K awarded  over three years to Drs. Judah Viola and Ericka Mingo of our Community Psychology Doctoral program to carry out research on Understanding Barriers to Equity in Public Safety Policies.  This work was originally supported by an NLU research seed grant.
• NSF Hispanic Serving Institutions Science, Technology, Engineering & Mathematics (HSI STEM): $488,600 over three years to Drs. Robyn Moncrief of UGC, Melanie Flores of HSI and Brad Olson  and Wytress Richardson of our Comunity Psychology Doctoral to build and study early work experiences and culturally-responsive professional mentoring for our CSIS undergraduates.  The research component is built from a seed grant carried out by Dr. Brad Olson of our Community Psychology Doctoral program.  The grant will be led by Drs. Robyn Moncrief of UGC, and Melanie Flores of HSI.  Dr. Brad Olson will lead the research component and Dr. Wytress Richardson will lead the development of the culturally responsive mentoring component.

Two major awards are from the Department of Education:

• Department of Education Hispanic Serving Institutions Science, Technology, Engineering & Mathematics (HSI-STEM) and Articulation Program:  $3,141,996 over five years is awarded in partnership with Morton and Blackhawk community colleges to further build our transfer excellence; build the capacity and opportunity for culturally responsive STEM mentoring by community college faculty;  and build experiential learning in CSIS professional and community settings. Dr. Robyn Moncrief is the Project director; Dr. Melanie Flores is HSI Director. 
• Department of Education Developing Hispanic Serving Title V grant: $2,885,334 over five years is awarded to further build out a community centered, culturally responsive model of teacher preparation in our undergraduate college.  Dr. Lisa Downey is the project director.
