Student Research

NLU’s doctoral and master’s programs share the aim of preparing thoughtful, passionate and diverse scholars and professionals with the skills and commitment to enacting scholarship that can change lives.

NLU’s Annual Doctoral Research Symposium is a virtual event that lets our doctoral candidates and new completers showcase their work. Presentation topics this year included language in the dreams of multilingual speakers, the experiences of preschool teachers in Palestine, and narratives of Black elementary school teachers.

In 2022, NLU presented its first-ever awards for outstanding dissertations to recognize exemplary, mission-aligned research and scholarship at the doctoral level. The awards went to:

Dr. Celeste A. Jackson, Community Psychology Program, Advisor Dr. Bradley Olson for their work: Examining Protective Factors That Promote Resilience Among Children With An Incarcerated Parent

Dr. Hyatt Nadar, Clinical Psychology Program, Advisor Dr. Sandra Zakowski for their work: Exploration of the Link Between Migration and Acculturation Related-Stress, Attachment Style, and Psychological Distress in Arab Immigrants, Refugees and Asylees

Master's Level Scholarship

Inquiry and scholarship are also integral components of our master’s programs. Teacher Leader candidates shared their capstone projects at two virtual mini conferences this year, focusing on learning during the pandemic.

Undergraduate Scholarship

Research is a growing component of our undergraduate experience. During Research Month, students in our undergraduate Computer Science and Information Systems program (CSIS) presented on projects that included measuring environmental quality and gathering data to design a social networking app for artists.
