Welcome to National Louis University:\n Hispanic Serving Institution

Somos National Louis University: We Are Proud To Be a Hispanic-Serving Institution

Since 2016, National Louis University has embraced its role as a Hispanic-Serving Institution not as a designation, but as a commitment to servingness. NLU purposefully designs environments where Latinx/e students belong, feel affirmed, access opportunities, and achieve equitable outcomes. Serving Latinx/e students requires more than access or enrollment—it requires examining and transforming the policies, practices, structures, and relationships that shape their educational experiences and success.

Our HSI designation reflects the trust students and families have placed in NLU, and our responsibility to honor that trust through meaningful institutional action. We strive to create an environment where Latinx/e students see their cultures, histories, and communities reflected and valued throughout the university—through culturally affirming teaching, expanded access to financial and academic support, and relationships that recognize the strengths students and their families bring to NLU. Latinx/e students at NLU are scholars, leaders, first-generation trailblazers, and community changemakers. Their success measures how well we are living out our responsibility as an HSI.

Key Aspects Of Our Desgination As An HSI

El Centro de Excelencia serves as the hub for programs and initiatives that advance NLU's work as a community and career-focused Hispanic-Serving Institution. It is the heart of NLU's HSI efforts — coordinating student programming, cultural events, community engagement, and institutional diversity initiatives. The Centro creates an inclusive space that welcomes linguistic and cultural diversity, and its team works directly with Latinx students at both the undergraduate and graduate levels to ensure they have the resources, representation, and support they need to succeed.

The Office of Student Engagement is offering conference funding for up to $500 to enrolled students. Conference funding is limited and will be available to students until May 31, 2027 or when funds run out. All submissions will be reviewed by The Office of Student Engagement. After review, you will be contacted to discuss the request before approval. Please submit your request via this link. Request for conference funding should be submitted at least a month before the registration deadline. If you have any questions regarding this form, please email Delyna Perez at dperez33@nl.edu.

What's Next for NLU as an HSI?

National Louis University's founding belief — that quality higher education belongs to everyone — finds its modern expression in its Hispanic-Serving Institution mission. Over the next decade, NLU will move decisively from HSI-designated to HSI-serving, embedding intentionality into every layer of the institution.

That work begins with students. NLU will expand bilingual advising, emergency financial support, peer mentorship, and culturally attuned mental health resources to address the full reality of students who are often first-generation, working, and caregiving alongside their studies.

The next ten years are a chance to build an institution that doesn't merely enroll Hispanic students — but genuinely helps them thrive.
