Shanie Keelean, '08 M.Ed. in Administration and Supervision, is the new Superintendent of Holland Public Schools in Michigan. She brings her extensive leadership experience, commitment to continuous improvement in teaching and learning, and dedication to the success of all students to the position.
A first-generation college student, Keelean began her career in education in Chicago Public Schools first as a substitute teacher and subsequently teaching Mathematics, English Language Arts and Physical Education. After completing a principal residency and a second Master's in Administration and Supervision from National Louis University, Keelean served as an assistant principal in Chicago Public Schools and Buffalo, NY, principal and associate superintendent in Waukegan.
With 3,000+ racially, ethnically, and socioeconomically diverse students throughout its seven schools, Keelean finds the Holland School District's size and demographics appealing. According to greatschools.org, of the current Holland Public Schools students, 47% are Hispanic, 36% are non-Hispanic white, 8% Black, 3% Asian or Pacific Islander and <1% Native American or Native Hawaiian or Other Pacific Islanders. "The reason I was drawn to Holland was because of the diversity and the high free and reduced lunch population. I've only worked in districts similar. That's what I love to do, make an impact for students and communities," she said.
