Our Mission

Our mission is to equip NLU scholars with the skills to recognize their power, celebrate Black heritage, and create transformative change within themselves and their communities. Together, all of us at NLU will amplify student voices, nurture their strengths, and uplift their communities in honor of their legacies and potential.

What does BSEEN do?

BSEEN is a community that is centered in understanding the Black American experience. The program is designed to create a space for all students at NLU to understand the historical and contextual experiences of the African diaspora in efforts to continue increasing their global understanding. Scholars in BSEEN seek to grow in understanding and empathy. It provides co-curricular programs and experiences designed to nurture NLU scholars as they grow into future social engineers. Participants will learn to create systems and processes that promote success for everyone.

If you have any questions, or would like to get involved, please feel free to reach out to us with your comments at bseen@nl.edu

Why Do We Call it Sankofa?

Sankofa is a Twi word from the Akan people of Ghana that means "to go back and get it" or "it is not taboo to go back for what you forgot". The word is derived from the words "san" (return), "ko" (go), and "fa" (look, seek, and take). Sankofa is a phrase that encourages learning from the past to inform the future, reaching back to move forward, and lifting as we climb. The power of Sankofa centers around this: to know history and your heritage is to know your current self, the world around you, and how to better both.

BECOMING Stories

BECOMING stories connect NLU scholars to NLU and Chicago community leaders who have: * Deepened their understanding of their Black identity, * Share from experiences that have shaped their understanding of themselves * and speak to how they design the narrative of who they can be in the future.
