Faces of NLU: Daylontie Jasper

As a Communication & New Media major at National Louis University, Daylontie Jasper has transformed a hobby into a promising career path while building meaningful connections within NLU's Black community. Currently serving as the Social Media Manager for NLU's Sankofa Lounge, he's already putting his academic learning into practice through his growing cinematography business.
"I had plans to drop out and try trade school," Jasper reflects. "I felt I had no purpose in the beginning of college, but after finding a potential career in a hobby of mine, I had a newfound look at college as a whole." This transformation speaks to the power of discovering one's passion in higher education – a journey that has exceeded expectations for many who know him. "If people bet money on my success, it would be in the thousands."

Jasper's experience at NLU has been enriched by the university's commitment to celebrating Black heritage and fostering inclusive spaces. He's found particular significance in the Sankofa Lounge, describing it as "home away from home." More than just a physical space, it's become a hub for community building: "Not only do I go there for events, but it's also where I find silence, find sleep, find a laugh, find a community."
Through his participation in BSEEN, Jasper has gained powerful insights about resilience and achievement in the face of historical barriers. His involvement has deepened his understanding of how African Americans have consistently exceeded limitations placed upon them by others.

As we celebrate Black History Month, this scholar sees his academic journey as part of a larger legacy. "My efforts have not been missed out on, because I am on the same path of those currently or of the past – trailblazers, money makers and record breakers."
His experience at NLU has been marked by meaningful connections with other Black scholars and staff, and he particularly values seeing students of all ethnicities coming together to celebrate Black heritage during campus events. This spirit of unity and celebration reflects NLU's commitment to creating an inclusive environment where all students can thrive.
As he continues his academic journey while growing his cinematography business, Jasper exemplifies the determination and creativity of NLU's diverse student body. His story reminds us that finding one's purpose can transform the college experience from a challenge into an opportunity for growth and achievement.
