Faculty Performance Evaluation Support

National Louis University values its faculty and their interrelated roles as outlined in the faculty domains: Teaching Excellence, Service, and Thought Leadership. The faculty and the University collectively benefit from the individual faculty member’s achievement and development.

NLU’s faculty evaluations are intended to provide a rational, fair, and systematic process for facilitating professional growth and balancing individual and institutional goals. Further, performance evaluations are expected to form the basis for faculty’s dossiers in the promotion or tenure review process.

Faculty Performance Evaluation (FPE)

Our performance review process is designed to provide faculty a formative assessment relative to the progress on their annual goals. This process is meant to assist faculty in developing meaningful goals that support their growth and development as a faculty member and as a professional or researcher in their field of practice.

Head to my.nl.edu and click "My Services" in the slide-out window on the left side of the screen. There you will see an FPE button. Click that to launch your FPE. If you have questions about the performance evaluation process or the new tool, please reach out to the Center for Teaching and Learning Excellence: CTLE@nl.edu

As a reminder, the revisions to FP103 created a different cadence for reviews for some faculty. As a reminder, the cadence outlined in FP103 listed in the table below. Two important notes

  1. A faculty member at the associate professor/professor rank or their academic unit leader may request a faculty performance evaluation during an "off-cycle" year.
  2. Faculty who are not engaging in a full faculty performance evaluation are still expected to set and review their goals with their academic unit leader.
Rank Cadence of Evaluation
Instructor of Practice and Teaching Instructor Annual
Assistant Professor of Practice, Assistant Teaching Professor, and Assistant Professor Annual
Associate Professor of Practice, Associate Teaching Professor, and Associate Professor Biennial
Professor of Practice, Teaching Professor, and Professor Triennial

Goals-only Review Timelines

Faculty should set goals for their expected contributions during the upcoming year, even if they are not scheduled for a full Faculty Performance Evaluation. This annual goal-setting will help faculty and reviewers communicate regarding shifting programmatic goals and faculty interests. It also provides an opportunity for faculty to check-in regarding long-term aspirations and short-term goals.

When setting goals, consider where progress in each domain fits within your career trajectory at NLU. For example: Do I have consistent practice in these criteria over a number of years?  How will I demonstrate my accomplishments in these criteria for my promotion dossier?
As you set new goals each year, consider addressing criteria within each domain that you did not address during your previous review period.

A typical workflow for developing goals for the year will include: a faculty member drafts goals, sends those goals to their program chair/reviewer for review, the faculty member and reviewer will meet to finalize goals, and then the reviewer submits faculty goals to the Academic Unit Leader. However, this is only a recommended workflow; you and your reviewer may have a different process.

Example Activities for Domain Criteria

The Provost Office and Faculty Development Committee collaborated to generate example activities that align with criteria for the Teaching Excellence, Service, Thought Leadership, and Academic Administration domains. These examples are meant to prompt one’s thinking about where various activities might align with the new criteria. These activities are not exhaustive, meaning one may have engaged an activity that’s not represented.

Note: The Academic Administration domain is only for faculty with load release for administrative duties.
