Biography:

Dr. Virginia Jagla is a Professor at National-Louis University in the Chicago area. She received her PhD in 1989 from the University of Illinois at Chicago in Curriculum and Instruction, her MS from the University of Chicago, and her BS from DePaul University. She has been a teacher and administrator in urban schools, museums and arts organizations. She has taught for various colleges and universities. Currently Dr. Jagla is the Program Chair for both the Elementary and Middle Grades Education Programs, Editorial Board member of i.e: Inquiry in Education, Co-Editor of Student Perspectives About Civic Engagement (SPACE), Series Editor of Advances in Service-Learning Research for Information Age Publishing.  She has been an editor of the online journal i.e.: inquiry in education, chair of the Middle Level Educators SIG of the Association of Teacher Educators and the chair of the Service-Learning & Experiential Education SIG of the American Educational Research Association. Dr. Jagla's first published book, Teachers’ Everyday Use of Imagination and Intuition: In Pursuit of the Elusive Image, was published in 1994. Other published books include: Transforming Teacher Education through Service-Learning (2013), Service-Learning Pedagogy: How Does It Measure Up? (2015), Service-Learning to Advance Social Justice in a Time of Radical Inequality (2015), and Educating Teachers and Tomorrow’s Students through Service-Learning Pedagogy (2018).  Dr. Jagla also has numerous published chapters and articles in various juried journals. She is a frequent presenter at local, national, and international conferences and symposia. Her research interests include imagination and intuition in education, the use of the visual and creative arts in education, with particular emphasis on creative drama; urban education and service-learning, particularly as it applies to middle level education.
