SOAR Team and Peer Mentors

The NLU First-Year Experience Peer Mentor Program are upper-class student leaders that aim to support first-year undergraduate students. Our purpose is to make sure that your transition from high to college is as smooth as possible, providing you with the necessary tools that will help you become a successful college student.

What does a Mentor do?

Responsibilities and Expectations:

  • Participate in a pre-orientation retreat
  • Assist SOAR experiences 
  • Interact with your mentees on a regular basis in order to: Provide positive role-modeling; Foster a sense of belonging; and Encourage academic and personal success.
  • Mentors will be placed in a GEN103 class to support their mentees 
  • Keep regular contact with your mentees throughout the term
  • Support in the planning and implementation of events designed to promote engagement among first-year students 

Qualifications:

  • 2.5 GPA or better
  • Sophomore or higher
  • Good academic & disciplinary standing
  • Knowledgeable about NLU
  • Comfortable meeting new people
  • Enrolled as an undergraduate student at NLU
  • Be open to working with diverse populations of students
