M.A.T. Alternative Educator Licensure Program
Teach full-time under an experienced mentor while earning your Master's and teaching license!
About the Program
NLU's Alternative Educator Licensure Program is designed to be completed in two years. Candidates start in the summer with intensive education courses before they begin working as the teacher-of-record in the fall. Candidates must work as a teacher-of-record in the fall and secure a position on their own. Those who are accepted into the program, but who are currently not teaching, are responsible for finding a teaching position. NLU will provide suggestions on schools or districts, but it is the candidate's responsibility to find a position. Candidates will go through the typical application process that any teacher seeking a K-12 position would pursue.
Candidates who successfully finish the program earn a Master's of Arts in Teaching (M.A.T.) degree and an Alternative Professional License, which will allow them to teach in the State of Illinois.
NLU offers this opportunity for individuals interested in teaching in any of the following levels:
- Early Childhood Education (PK-2nd Grade)
- Elementary Education (Grades 1-6)
- Middle Grades (Grades 5-8)
- Secondary (Grades 9-12)
- Special Education (PK- 22 years old)

- Major in Reading, English/Language Arts, Mathematics, or a Science degree (otherwise, must submit transcripts to the State Board of Education for review)
