Stay involved with NCE’s Reading and Language Program!
There are many ways for alumni and friends to get involved with the National College of Education and the Reading and Language program. If you are interested in learning more about any of the opportunities below, please contact us.
- Attend Reading program and center events and professional development opportunities
- Earn NLU graduate credit hours participating in professional development offered by the Reading and Language Program’s affiliations.
- Volunteer with the Good News Reading Program or the The Howard Area Reading Program (HARP) to support program development and research related to the instruction of at risk-readers.
- Become a member of Chicagoland professional organizations that NLU reading faculty are closely involved with.

Employment Opportunities and Career Tools
Are you an NLU graduate seeking job opportunities or an employer seeking qualified candidates for reading and literacy specialists and leaders? Handshake is National Louis University's online career platform and the official network to reach National College of Education graduates across the nation. Questions? Handshake enables NLU students and alumni to:
- Connect with jobs from over 200K employers
- Access personalized job recommendations based on selected degree and areas of interest
- Register for NLU career events, job fairs and on-campus interviews
- Schedule appointments with the NLU career advisors in the Career Bridge
To create an alumni account with Handshake:
- First, visit the Handshake website at: https://nl.joinhandshake.com/login.
- After you are directed to the Handshake website, select Sign Up for an Account.
- Handshake will ask if you are signing up as a Student/Alumni or Employer. Select Student/Alumni.
- Once you have selected Student/Alumni, choose National Louis University as the institution you want to connect with.
- Because you are an alumni, disregard the "Instructions from your School" note. This is only if you are currently a student at National Louis University.
- Complete the following information below. Again, because you are an alumni, please register an account using your personal email.
- Check the small box that states "I Agree to the Terms and Services and have read the Private Policy" to finish.
- Finally, Handshake will send a confirmation email via the email you registered with. It will provide a blue link to finish setting up your account.
- National Louis University will be notified that you have registered an account with Handshake. We will approve the request.
Handshake is free and provides employers with the opportunity to post vacant positions to National Louis University's online career database. To create an employer account with handshake:
- Visit www.nl.edu/HandshakeEmployer
- Select the EMPLOYER account type from the options presented (please note: you must use a company email to be approved)
- Fill out the information requested then click SIGN UP
- Verify your email
