Student Health Insurance Program
National Louis University is committed to the health and welfare of all its students. There are specific populations of students who are required to have health insurance and some populations that are not required but are eligible to opt-in or enroll for the health plan coordinated through NLU.
STUDENT HEALTH INSURANCE BENEFIT INFORMATION
The waiver process for the 2026–2027 Academic Year has transitioned back to National Louis University (NLU) staff and will now be managed in-house. Students with questions regarding the waiver transition or the waiver process should contact the Student Health Insurance Program (SHIP) email for assistance.
For enrollment and benefits information, students may continue to refer to the annual Student Health Insurance brochure, which contains plan details and benefit information. Learn more about the Student Health Insurance.

WAIVER REQUEST PROCESS
Students who have their own qualifying health insurance must submit a waiver through the NLU Waiver Request Form, seen below by the posted deadline. Waivers submitted after the deadline will not be accepted. Students are only required to submit one waiver per academic year. Waivers expire at the start of each academic year in the fall. Because waivers are valid for the entire academic year, students who wish to waive Student Health Insurance must submit a new waiver before the start of each subsequent academic year to maintain their waiver status. Students should submit all requested documentation to ensure an accurate review of their waiver request. Waiver requests may be denied if insufficient documentation is submitted or the plan information submitted does not provide comparable coverage. Resubmitted waiver requests after a denial decision may not be reviewed until the next waiver submission period, so charges will remain on the student account for denied waivers. Requests received after the deadline will not be accepted, and charges will remain on student accounts.
The link to submit a waiver is available here:
https://app.smartsheet.com/b/form/019f8594767176a395ddd1325d58a3d8
The waiver form will be active one month before the deadlines listed to accept new waiver or enrollment requests. Waivers are not accepted after the deadlines. The deadline to waive quarter coverage is 9/21/26 or by the academic term’s add/drop deadline.

- Keep your confirmation email for your records.
Steps to enroll Dependents:
- Go to https://app.smartsheet.com/b/form/019f85950e6d754ba5e5e6b7a4caf2ab
- Complete an Enrollment Request Form for each spouse or dependent using your NLU ID number
- Keep your confirmation email for your records.
- After charges are added to student accounts, and before the Add/Drop deadline, check to make sure charges show accurately on your student account.
Once enrolled in the health insurance plan, coverage is automatically renewed every term of enrollment until the student submits a waiver by the posted deadline. New Quarter-schedule students may request enrollment before each Quarter per the posted deadlines. Students on a semester schedule may request enrollment twice a year in August and January. If enrollment is declined or not open, students can explore short-term gap insurance as an alternative and wait until the next enrollment period. - Kendall College for the Culinary Arts: Students enrolled in the Kendall College programs (Certificate, Associate's, or Bachelor's) programs
- International students residing in the United States
- Students living in on-campus housing
*To be enrolled in the Student Health Insurance Program, students must have an address in the United States. Students are responsible for ensuring their address is updated with the university.
**International Students: For students who are part of auto-enrolled populations, such as international students, if NLU does not have a U.S. address in your NLU student record, you will not be auto-enrolled.
OPTIONALLY ENROLLED STUDENTS – MUST SUBMIT AN ENROLLMENT REQUEST
- Clinical Psychology program (PSYD or MA in Clinical Psychology) enrolled in 1 semester hour or more (MS/MA in Counseling not included or covered)
- DBA Program in Florida
- School of Nursing
Insured students who are enrolled in the Student Health Plan may also enroll their eligible dependents by submitting an enrollment form by the posted deadline.
Charges for health insurance are added to student accounts. Payment arrangements are coordinated through the Office of Student Finance.
If you need temporary or gap coverage until the next enrollment period, look at Other Health Insurance Options.
OTHER HEALTH INSURANCE OPTIONS
For students who are not eligible for insurance or who miss an enrollment period, there are a variety of other health insurance options. However, these programs do not go through NLU. Students looking for private insurance options can now find a variety of plans available through the Affordable Care Act. Learn about the Health Insurance Marketplace and explore the Understanding Health Insurance for College Students guide before signing up for insurance.
SHORT-TERM HEALTH INSURANCE
Some students may need short-term insurance to cover a coverage gap. Students who are not able to enroll in NLU’s SHIP or have missed the enrollment should look into short-term coverage. If interested in short-term coverage, we refer students to contact Gallagher Health Insurance through the link below:
