Faculty & Staff Resources

Welcome to our Faculty & Staff Resources page. Please email learn@nl.edu with any questions.

Learning Support embeds its Writing, Computer Science, and Math Specialists into certain classes to provide auxiliary support. Embedded course support may include:

  • Synchronous class visits to co-facilitate a topic or offer floating student support
  • Announcements of math, computer science, or writing-related tips, resources, and workshops that supplement the course
  • Constructive feedback on math, computer science, or writing-related assignments, as requested by students.
  • One-on-one meetings with students for support with writing, math, or computer science
  • Outreach to students who may need additional support, based on case referrals from the instructor.

To learn more about Embedded Support options for your course, email learn@nl.edu.

Learning Support Specialists and Peer Tutors can offer support with their courses in a number of ways:

  • In-class math, writing, or computer science workshops
  • Co-teaching of math, writing, or computer science concepts
  • Floating student support during independent practice
  • Assistance facilitating group activities

Please use this form to express interest in having a Learning Specialist or Peer Tutor visit to provide additional support. We are excited to collaborate with you!

Faculty and staff may use Retain to refer students to Learning Support. After receiving the referral, a Math, Computer Science, or Writing Specialist will reach out to the referred student offer support and an appointment.

Students may benefit from referrals if they need 1-on-1 tutoring in math, computer science, writing, ELL support, research, time management, study skills, or other general academic skills.

How to use Retain to refer a student to Learning Support:

  1. Have a conversation with the students about areas of support they are seeking, if possible. Notify the students that a Learning Support Specialist will be reaching out to offer support. This will encourage the students to expect and follow up with Learning Support.
  2. On the student's Retain profile, select the "Actions" tab and click the "+ New Action" button and select "Case" from the dropdown.
  3. Select "Referral" for the Case Type, then select one of the below options for the Case Subject:
    • Referral to Learning Support
    • Referral for ELL Support
      • Faculty can use our ELL Referral Chart to determine if an ELL case should be created in Retain.
  4. Select the specific class associated with this alert, if applicable.
  5. Provide additional comments that detail the student's needs or areas of struggle. Any information that will help a Learning Support specialist better understand and support the student will be useful.
  1. Include scheduling a tutoring appointment as part of the course goals.
  2. Recommend students go to Study Tables to meet with Specialists or Peer Tutors, online at https://nl.edu/learning-support/studytables/.
  3. Introduce a student directly to a Learning Support Specialist. (Learn more about our individual specialists here.)

Information that can be added to D2L or Syllabus:
